DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

Our adventure began in July 2004, where our main challenge was to find a character naive enough to behave against common sense and logic in order to achieve his goals.
We finally found him in William Ashe, a 30-year old man who has the emotional age of a 16-year old, whose naiveté and buoyant energy could take him anywhere and put him into almost any situation.

As the project developed, it became clear that William Ashe had some risky attributes, as he became an extremely verbose protagonist (and antagonist) who could potentially annoy an audience with his behaviors. However, we saw that by increasing the energy and exaggeration in these behaviors early on, it would provide a major contrast in the few moments of internal conflict and contemplation he experiences later in the story.

Audition mixes elements of film noir, slapstick, parody, satire, drama, mystery, and the spiritual, which is a great challenge for such a short film that--in all actuality--is a character study! William's belief in signs--the perceived and sometimes superstitious connections we make from fortuitously-timed moments or ideas based upon what we sense--became vital in the creation of this film.

Together with a wonderful cast and crew, we spent twenty-four months structuring our modest short into what it is today: a comedic love letter to those who are trying.
